Muay Thai Boxing is a 3000 year old hand-to-hand combat system and is the national sport of Thailand. It is also referred to as the ‘Science of the 8 Limbs’, incorporating kicks, punches, knees and elbows.

There are many benefits and essential points of Muay Thai. It is an extremely effective form of physical exercise and self-defence, as well as about self-discipline, self-awareness, and respect. It is used for conditioning and improves physique and reflexes.

More and more women are coming to the Academy to learn Muay Thai for self-defence, when, in the event of an actual attack, it’s the elbow and knee techniques that would be particularly useful.

Gradings

Students have the opportunity to grade. we realise that not everyone wants to compete, but still want to obtain a level and have goals that tey can see themselves progressing towards. this is done in the form of Muay Boran, (ancient thai boxing) this involves terminology, history, learning set techniques and its names etc. the grading is done outside regular classes as a seminar usualy lasting 3-4 hours. GRADINGS ARE OPTIONAL! and are usualy held every 3 months.  Students must have trained for a minimum of 3 months before they can commence the grading structure.

Ritual Dance ~ Wai Khru and Ram Muay

Wai Khru is an ancient custom which is closely bound to the fundamental Thai concept that providers of knowledge are all Khru (teachers) and are worthy of the utmost respect. Therefore, ‘Wai Khru’ means ‘paying respect to teachers’.

Before a fight, Muay Thai fighters show respect for their teacher through performing a ritualized dance, a tradition which goes back to ancient times and which has been preserved from generation to generation. It decreases agitation and psychologically prepares the fighter for the forthcoming contest. It can also function as a warm up exercise before the actual fight. For example, the characteristic hand-rotations involve using the arm muscle as well as refining coordination and synchronization. The Wai Khru and Ram Muay is a graceful and aesthetic ritual, which has no religious connotations, so fighters of every nationality, race and creed can participate in it freely without fearing that in doing so they are breaking the codes of their own particular religion.
