KRAV MAGA

Take a moment and think about how you could be attacked.
By a punch? A kick? A grab? A choke? Fighting on the ground?
What if the attacker had a weapon? Maybe a stick? or a knife? what about a baseball bat?
Now complicate the situation.
Think about your surroundings. Is the floor uneven? Is it Dark? Where is your escape route? Or maybe you don't know where you are? What if there were multiple attackers?
What if the attacker intended to rape you? How would you react and respond when under the effects of stress?

These are the foundations of Krav Maga.

For a 3 hour taster session come to the Jai Freestyle Academy on
Saturday 6th February 1pm-4pm  with.....

Rob Cook
Uk Director and Chief Instructor For The IKMA
Qualified And Ratified As Level 3

Fundraising For Children Of Thailand

The Jai Freestyle Martial Arts & Fitness Academy and Bingley Martial Arts & Fitness Centre have spent the past month raising money for a school in Ubon, Thailand. The school is run by our Thai Instructor's father-in-law. It is a very under funded school with very little amenities, equipment and supplies. We hope the money we have raised will provide the school with computers and resources.

In Total We Managed To Raise £500.

A big thank you to all our students who kindly donated to this worthwhile cause. The generosity and dedication towards both gyms has been overwhelming.

Also, a big thank you to the people who have helped Robin train in preparation for his fight in Oubon, Thailand, especially Kru Teed, Karl Stoddart, Colin Bland and Debbie Fearnley.

Ben Molloy Selected For European Championships

Following his win at the Bad Company Thai Boxing Show in Leeds in April where he beat a very strong opponent from the Bad Company Gym, Thai Boxer Ben Molloy from Sutton added another win to his record by beating a fighter from County Durham at Pierre Mahon’s Thai Boxing Show in Harrogate at the weekend. Molloy fought over three 2 minute rounds and convincingly took the fight, dropping his opponent with a jab in the first round. Trainer Robin Shepherd was very pleased with how Molloy fought in a very composed manner with an excellent Thai style.

Ian Wilcock Wins Thai Boxing Title

Eastburn’s Jai Freestyle Thai Boxers are going from strength to strength. Following a recent show hosted by Bad Company in Leeds on 28th April, fighters Ben Molloy, from Sutton-in-Craven, and Ian Wilcock, from Glusburn, both won their Pro-Am fights against strong technical opponents from Bad Company and Craig Willis’ Gym.

After an impressive first fight from Molloy, he was immediately matched up for Master Kevin’s Siam Camp show in Oldham, which was held bank holiday weekend, on Sunday 27th May. Unfortunately due to injury, gained the week prior to the event, Molloy was unable to fight. Stepping in at the last minute was Tom Spencer, from Embsay, who received a draw after a gallant first fight against a Siam Camp fighter. Vicky Lakin, from Steeton, and Colin Bland, from Silsden, also fought at this show and although putting up a great fight against extremely strong opponents from Golden Team and Knuckles Gym, Lakin and Bland lost on points.

Mike Vella from Steeton fought his first fight and displayed an outstanding performance, beating his opponent from Golden Team Leeds. Vella demonstrated extreme strength, determination and skill during all three rounds.

Wilcock, having had a very successful past year in his fighting career, was offered a shot at the National Pro-Am Welterweight Champion Title, to which he accepted the challenge. Wilcock faced five two-minute rounds against a more experienced fighter from Golden Team, who had fought more than twice as many bouts. Wilcock, being a very good technical and strong Thai Boxer, provided the audience with an amazing first round, sending in combinations of punches, kicks, knees and elbows. Wilcock successfully beat his opponent, taking the Title, after just the first round. The opposing team threw in the towel, with their fighter being unable to continue for a second round having received a knee to the head, followed by an elbow that made a deep cut above his eye.

                           CONGRATULATIONS IAN !!!

Instructor Kru Robin Shepherd and Thai Instructor Kru Teed are both very proud of their fighters. They said everyone showed true dedication and trained very hard for the shows. The Jai Freestyle gym at Eastburn Mills was opened only 3 years ago by Kru Shepherd and has seen immense improvements in that time. In the past year the club has gained a team of 10 strong fighters, and now having gained a National Title and been ranked in the World Amateur Championships in the first half of 2007, the gym will be looking to aim for even more success in the near future. However, the gym is not just geared at fighters. Jai Freestyle is dedicated to providing professional and friendly tuition to those looking to improve their fitness, lose weight, build self-confidence and for self-protection. Thai boxing is now recognised as one of the best forms of exercise to get fit and lose weight quickly, regardless of age and ability. Beginners are always welcome. Jai Freestyle strives to be the number one place to train for top quality martial arts and fitness!

Vicky Wins Silver Medal At World Championships

WMF World Championships March 2007, Bangkok, Thailand
Event Diary......  (written by Vicky Lakin and Robin Shepherd)

1st March 2007 - only 1 day to go before myself and Kru Robin Shepherd fly out to Bangkok. Getting excited now. Been checking the weather forecast. It is 82 degrees on an evening and 102 degrees throughout the day, plus quite high humidity. Good job Kru Robin has had me training in the sauna!!!

3rd March 2007 - arrived in Bangkok with Master Kevin Lloyd and 7 others of the England Squad. Grand Master Woody collected us from the airport. Soon as got to hotel we had to all register and have a medical. All fine.

4th March 2007 - had to go for weigh in at 6 a.m. Vicky weighed in at 61.84 kg putting her in the middle of her weight category 60 - 63.5 kgs Senior Female Light Welter Weight. At this time, on seeing the name list sheet, it appeared that there was going to be just 4 of us in this category. Then went off for squad training at 6:30 a.m. with Robin and Vincent from KO Gym London. Had to do sprinting drills and light pad work. Very hot here. Rest of day spent chilling by pool and meeting others from the team. That evening the draw was carried out to find out who was fighting who. We found out the results during a Welcome Party hosted at the hotel for all countries fighting. There are a total of 32 countries that have entered. It was then that the British Coach Mark Corfield informed me that 1 country, Philipinnes, had pulled out leaving only 3 of us. Those 2, Russia (Anna Kondratyeva) and Belarus (Maryia Astapchuk), were drawn to fight each other, giving me a Bye in the first round. This means that I shall be fighting immediately in the Final which guarantees me at least a Silver Medal - but we don't want that one! Think this will be on Saturday, subject to change. The Party was fun. Had some Muay Boran demonstrations on and got to know all the team including legendary fighter Master Ronnie Green.

5th March 2007 - first day of fights today for some of our team. 3 blokes and 1 female fought. Nicola beat Canada and Dom beat Japan. They go through to next round. Unfortunately the other two lost, one on points and the other by TKO.

6th March 2007 - pretty successful day for England. 4 wins 2 losses today. Vicky saw her two opponents battle it out. Unfortunately didn't get much chance to analyse the winner's fighting techniques because the lass won the fight in only 11 seconds in the first round, due to punches and elbows. Belarus beat Russia, so Vicky will be fighting Belarus in the final, which is now to be held on Thursday (not saturday as first thought)! Robin says, 'it'll be reet!!!!'

8th March 2007 - Vicky's Fight Day - didn't go to plan as was knocked out by a head kick (from Belarus lass, who is pro fighter, 5 x Belarus Champion and has won 90% of her fights by Knock Out with only 2 losses) which was perfectly timed and just happened to catch on pressure point. Why didn't she have her guard up you ask? ha ha ha, because as Vicky stepped in to deliver a punch her right dropped slightly and the kick slipped over the top of the glove catching pressure point on jaw/neck. Vicky returns back to England as World Silver Medallist and ranked WMF Number 2 in the World in her weight category.

10th March 2007 - Men's finals today. England Team was very successful overall. Coming home from Thailand with a total of 9 medals, out of 15 fighters - 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze - Well Done To Everyone!!!

Fought on a tournament basis, Vicky may have up to 5 days of fights to win in order to reach the medal stages. Number of fight days is dependent on the number of countries entering fighters in her weight category. Vicky will be fighting full Thai rules, which allows punches, kicks, knees and elbows to the head and body.

Vicky is undertaking a gruelling training routine to prepare herself for the World Championships. Her training programme involves a daily run, pad work, bag work, circuit training, technique work and sparring, along with periodic training with the England Squad in Manchester.

Muay Thai Boxing Training Trip To Thailand
December 2006

Trainer Robin Shepherd took a team of Thai Boxers to Bangkok, Thailand, in December 2006 to train at the International Muay Thai Training Gym, Jittigym, located in Ratchadapisek. Accompanying Shepherd was Thai Boxers: Vicky Lakin, Malcolm Hughes, Ryan Higgs, Ben Molloy, Tom Bouda and Bryce Greenwood.

Jittigym has a strong reputation for quality training at international and Thai level. The training schedule comprised both morning and afternoon sessions from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Early morning warm up involved a run around Chatuchak Park and shadow boxing, followed by one-on-one pad work and sparring technique work and afterwards conditioning drills. The afternoon session commences with skipping for half an hour, followed by pad work, bag work, sparring and clinch work, finishing with sit ups, press ups, weights, other conditioning drills, warm down and stretching.

The students gained a lot of knowledge from training one-on-one with such knowledgable ex-stadium champions. These annual trips will take the club from strength to strength, take the fighters further in their careers and assist the trainers in their teaching of authentic Muay Thai.

Although the training was gruelling, all the students enjoyed the training and will be returning again next year, hopefully for longer.

Craig Burke got a knock-out in the first minute of his fight when a body-shot finished Liam McCrave of Harrogate ABC. He was also awarded the title of boxer of the night by Silsden fighter Paul Newby. Kildwick’s Paul Hobson was also on top form, who started fast, landing an array of quality punches against Joel Mabbott of Unity ABC and enough to force Mabbott to throw in the towel half way through the first round. Muay Thai Boxing Training Trip To Thailand  February 2005

Head Muay Thai Boxing Instructor Robin Shepherd and Assistant Instructor Vicky Lakin spent two weeks living and training with professional Muay Thai Boxers at the world famous Fairtex Camp near Bangkok.

You train for 6 hours a day, starting at 6 a.m. for a morning session, followed by afternoon training from 3 p.m. Training includes: one-to-one training with a Thai Personal Instructor involving a few 6 minute rounds of pad work using a mixture of punches, kicks, knees, elbows and grappling techniques; punch bag work for power and technique practice; sparring work with various instructors/fighters and gym work (i.e. weights / conditioning exercises).

Training in Thailand is to become an annual event and hopefully the instructors will be able to take along some of their students next time, as it was such a great experience and the Thais were extremely friendly and hospitable.
