What are Kettlebells?
Kettlebells are a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannon ball with a handle (essentially a Russian dumbbell). Kettlebells are considered by many as a modern training phenomenon, but are actually in fact steeped in history, dating as far back as 1700s, and are long established training tools.
What are the benefits of using Kettlebells?
Kettlebells are viewed by many as the ultimate conditioning tool. They provide an effective, fun, functional (relevant to every day life) and adaptable way to get fit.
Kettlebells burn lots of calories, strip body fat, tone your body, and work your whole body as one unit.
Kettlebells are used by the Russian Military, American Secret Service, as well as MMA Fighters, Olympic athletes, and celebrities. Kettlebells are a time efficient, physically challenging, mentally engaging, effective and unique training tool.
Kettlebells develop and improve:
Body Composition (loose body fat (loose weight) and develop muscle)
Strength and Power
Hypertrophy (increase muscle mass)
Muscular Endurance
Cardiovascular Endurance
Functional abilities (relevant to your sport and everyday life)
Whole body strength and motor skills for many every day activities and sports
Core Function
Sports Performance
Flexibility and Co-ordination
Relevance to Martial Arts and Sports in general:
Kettlebells are an excellent conditioning tool to accompany your martial arts and other sports training
Kettllebells are a good conditioning tool for kicking and punching. Kettlebells work your behind ie your rear leg muscles (hamstrings), your back (erector spinae) & bum (gluteus maximus). These muscles are fundamental in generating forward motion and acceleration, which in turn drives the performance in kicking and punching.
Some martial arts require power, and a lot of this power comes from the hip area. Kettlebell lifts use the hip area as the power zone, and therefore they improve the power at the hips.
Kettlebells work several muscles at the same time, and therefore are great at developing whole body strength and more relevant to the way your body works in martial arts (you don’t just use one muscle to throw a punch do you) .
Kettlebells improve the core area (your ability of your trunk to support the work of your arms and legs) and therefore in turn are good conditioning tools for kicks and punches, elbows and knees.
The dynamic control that is needed to accelerate and decelerate a kettlebell swung at speed relates well to many sports & helps to develop shoulder/hip strength, stability and flexibility.
Kettlebells improve coordination and agility which in turn promotes improved sports performance
Improves flexibility which is required in all sports.
Help you make fight weight. Kettlebells help improve your body composition. They help you to loose body fat and build muscle, so a great way to build a lean, strong physique without bulking up.
